The Mid-Eastern Regional Fly-In (MERFI) is an EAA-sponsored fly-in held at the Mansfield Lahm Airport. Located in Mansfield, Ohio, MERFI is an annual event occurring during a weekend in August. It is quite literally true to say that the MERFI fly-in is a long term success story. The original fly-in was developed by the local EAA chapters who promoted the fly-in to the Mid-Eastern Regional community under the guidance of the EAA in 1965. Until August of 2003, the development of MERFI was controlled by a loosely organized community of volunteers. During the course of development, MERFI grew in complexity and ability and presented a number of awards to a wide following of loyal patriots. The MERFI Fly-in was organized 38 times!
In 2005, MERFI was re-formed, signaling a new era for the Fly-in. MERFI is a corporation whose sole purpose is the growth and development of the MERFI fly-in. The corporation is run by the members of the Mid- Eastern Regional EAA community. Membership in the corporation is open to all and entitles members to elect their representatives on the Board of Directors and to participate more fully in matters affecting the development of the fly-in. Structures like MERFI have been used successfully by Sun-n-Fun, Copper State, & Rocky Mountain and many other regional fly-ins. The corporate structure is popular, at least part, because it adds a level of stability and accountability absent in ad hoc community driven projects. The existence of the MERFI corporation means that users of MERFI can be assured that the Fly-in will remain alive, will remain backed by an accountable organization, and will have the ongoing support and promotion that gives aircraft designers and aviation businesses the confidence to choose MERFI over other marketing systems.
